Record Turnout Raises Funds for Charity

Published: 23 Apr 2010

Businesses from across the city battled it out at Fraser Brown’s charity football tournament last week, raising an incredible £4,800 for When You Wish Upon a Star in the process.

Following plenty of fancy footwork and some impressive goal scoring, Six Degrees Events finally emerged victorious at the end of the evening, with Yorkshire Bank as the runners up.

This was the second year of the tournament and 32 teams took part, beating last year’s turnout and making for an evening filled with plenty of competitive spirit and a bit of business banter.

Peter Thornley, Managing Partner at Fraser Brown was prevented from playing this year due to injury, but was joined by ex-Nottingham County and Derby County player Michael Johnson, to present the Tournament Trophy to the winners.

He said, "I like to think that it was my absence from the team that prevented Fraser Brown from progressing to the final, but judging by the excellent standard of play we’ve seen from the teams tonight, I’m not sure that’s strictly true! Six Degrees Events played a great game and this trophy is well deserved." He also presented Six Degrees’ Centre Forward James Allen with the Man of the Match award.

Craig Brothers, team captain for Six Degrees Events, added, "I played in the tournament last year but as part of another team so I knew what a good evening and how enjoyable it was. It’s a great opportunity to meet people, build contacts and raise money for a good cause all at the same time. Plus, When You Wish Upon a Star is a charity close to our hearts so when the entry form arrived we jumped at the chance to get involved. Winning is the icing on the cake!"

Renowned Indian restaurant Cumin supplied the food for the evening which provided much needed fuel for the players and their supporters. Shelley Anand, Manager at Cumin, said, "We were delighted to be asked to provide food for the tournament again. We cater for a lot of corporate events and are always pleased to support local charities."
