Breaking up at Christmas

Published: 06 Jan 2008

Christmas and New Year is usually a time for enjoying with the family, though if you’ve found it stressful and uncertain then Fraser Brown’s Bingham office is here to help.

Lynda Clifford, a solicitor in family law at Fraser Brown, says: “It’s not unusual for couples to break up over the festive period, and solicitors dealing with family problems find January can be the busiest time of year.

“It is important that anyone considering ending a relationship or who suspects their partner may do so knows where they stand and there are a multitude of things to be considered. Often moving out of the family home can be one of the biggest wrenches. Whether practical or not, the fact is that married partners each have a right to remain in the matrimonial home irrespective of who bought it or who has a mortgage on it.

“Financially, married couples have a legal obligation to support the other in the form of maintenance until they are divorced and this can sometimes extend beyond divorce. The law behind any kind of marriage breakdown or separation is hugely complex, and we can help.”

Fraser Brown’s Bingham office offers free 15 minute sessions which are available on alternate Wednesday evenings for people to find out more about where they stand and how they can handle their individual situation.
