East Midlands Business Community get in the swing to raise money for life saving equipment

Natalie Gibbons

Members of the East Midlands business community came together on Tuesday 17th November to take part in a new charity golf day for the property and construction sector at The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club, raising over £1,500.

The funds raised at the Pros & Cons Golf Day, which was sponsored by local firms Fraser Brown Solicitors and construction consultancy Gleeds, will go towards providing a defibrillator for Swanwick village in Derbyshire.

The event, which welcomed 44 players from the business community, saw 11 teams take on either the Championship or Signature courses at the club and the rounds were played using the ‘Texas Scramble’ rules. Winning team Santander, which included Stephen Young, Mike Dodson, David Findlay and Andrew Prickett, were able to choose which charity they wanted funds raised from the event to go to.

Stephen, relationship director at Santander, has been fundraising for the British Heart Foundation for three years since he lost his friend to a heart condition in the village where he lives, Swanwick. Stephen announced during the Pros & Cons Golf Day that the funds raised would go towards providing a much-needed defibrillator for the village.

Stephen said: “I am part of a small community in Derbyshire who are raising money to purchase, place and maintain a defibrillator. This has been done in memory of our friend Andy Booth who was a pillar of the local community and the owner of a local store. Andy sadly passed away from a heart related condition in his 40’s.

“Myself and the local community held a fundraising event last month which raised £900 and with the additional £1,500 from the Pros & Cons Golf Day, and the support of Swanwick Parish Council, we hope we can now order not just one but two defibrillators for the community. “I would like to thank my team members on the day, The Nottinghamshire Golf Club and all involved with organising the event, not only for a really enjoyable day but also for making a donation to our cause that may literally change people’s lives in the area.”

Following the tournament, participants retired to the club house where the winning team, and the winners of the nearest to the pin and longest drive were announced and presented with prizes. Guests then enjoyed a much deserved two-course dinner and took part in a raffle.

John Tansur, commercial director at Fraser Brown, said:

“It was fantastic to see so many faces from businesses across the East Midlands taking part in the first Pros & Cons Golf Day, raising money for this fantastic cause. We continue to be thankful to the businesses and organisations, many of which are our clients, that turn out to support our fundraising efforts.”

David Ford, director at Gleeds, added: “Due to its popularity, we have decided to make this event an annual occurrence so that we can continue to come together to raise money for important causes. We all had a fantastic time and I’d like to wish Stephen and his local community all the best with his continued fundraising efforts.”
