Discrimination for Employees
Have you been discriminated against on the grounds of your race, age, sex, religion, nationality, personal characteristic or because you have a disability? You have the right not to be discriminated against on these grounds.
Did you know that discrimination does not have to be direct, it may be indirect?
Did you know that discrimination laws apply to recruitment and selection, that is, you can be discriminated against even before you are in a position of employment.
Did you know that discrimination can apply to training, promotion, selection for redundancy or other areas relating to your employment?
What if your employer does not want you to work beyond the compulsory retirement age? Did you know that you can request to work beyond the compulsory retirement age?
Did you know that you cannot be selected for redundancy on the grounds of your age or that you cannot be selected for redundancy just because you are pregnant?
Are you being bullied at work? Are you facing harassment that may be related to your age, sex, race, disability, religion, nationality or a personal characteristic? There is no place for behaviour of this sort in the work place and you have rights which can protect you against such behaviour.
Did you know that your employer has to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate you if you are disabled? What constitutes reasonable adjustments? Your employer must accommodate your special needs to assist you the performance of your job.
Did you know that if you are a woman you are entitled to be treated no less favourably than a man in the same employment? This involves being paid the same as a man at your workplace who is doing the same work.
Are you a father who is involved in child care or involved in the care of an adult? What are your rights should you need to work flexible hours to accommodate your family needs? You too have the right to apply for flexible working. If you are not treated equally to a woman, then you may have a claim for sexual discrimination.
